What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

March 27th, 2009

acrostic-2 The question caught me of guard about a fortnight ago, in a post from the  Samba blog.

It’s perhaps the one seeking question that finds our greatest potential hiding.

Today marks a change in the title format, I think a lot of this blog’s potential is yet to be realised and so more accessible post titles are hopefully a step towards progress.

It’s 1am but, I’m trying to follow my own advice on this  one.  It reminded me of Dead Poet society’s,  John Keating (played by Robin Williams) speaking to his English class,

OxfordGraveyard By markhillary“They’re not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they’re destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? - - Carpe - - hear it? - - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.”

I hope your not sitting down.  A wingsuit is exactly what it says it is (see vid below).  Apparently it’s used for base jumping (jumping of cliffs like a “mad” man).

wingsuit base jumping from Ali on Vimeo.

“Life is about giving up what is, for what could be.”  My friend, Stone Walters told me this about 5 years ago, a time when I was thinking about getting into the arts seriously.

Although base jumping  its not for me,  the takeaway here is two fold, firstly the wings on a wingsuit can look pretty ridiculous on a grown man… till you see him flying.

Secondly, the fabric that holds sheep-walking office- job culture together is sometimes as dangerous as base jumping. In base jumping, the distance between the jumper and the cliff face is short, but so is life.

What’s your wingsuit look like?

PS - Stone Walters gave up nearly everything to write, record and market a remarkable debut album a couple of years back.  His lead single recently made the BBC’s Radio 2 A-list, and a place on the new Brits 2009 album.  Result.
